1900: Queen Lili'uokalani returns to Honolulu from a trip to Washington just 10 days before Hawai'i officially becomes a U.S. territory.

1907: The Wahiawa Consolidated Pineapple Co. has increased the capacity of
its canning plant and now will be able to turn out 25 to 30 tons of pineapple per day, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports.

1950: Thousands of people are reported flocking to Kona to see the lava flows from the Mauna Loa eruption that began June. 1. There are now five separate lava flows.

1971: The $62 million Sheraton Waikiki opens.

1976: Hokule'a arrives in Tahiti on its historic first voyage. Some 20,000 people gathered in Pape'ete to watch the canoe from Hawai'i and from the past sail into view.

1995: Father Damien de Veuster is beatified by Pope John Paul II in a ceremony in Belgium. A 102-member delegation from Hawai'i attended the ceremony.
