Man hurt in van theft at community college

Advertiser Staff

A 50-year-old man was injured today while trying to prevent the theft of his van from the parking lot of Honolulu Community College.

The 2:15 p.m. incident at 455 Kokea St. is being investigated as an attempted murder, Kalihi police district Maj. Kurt Kendro said.

The injured man suffered head and leg injuries after being dragged while hanging on to the driver's-side door of the van. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical but stable condition and has since improved to serious condition.

The male thief drove off in the van and is still at large, Kendo said.

While trying to flee in the van, the thief allegedly hit the victim and then attempted to get him off the door by driving past a guardrail piling.
