Fujikawa, 15, qualifies for U.S. Open

Advertiser Staff

Tadd Fujikawa, a 15-year-old who just completed his freshman year at Moanalua High School, qualified for the U.S. Open yesterday by winning the sectional qualifier at Poipu Bay Golf Club on Kauai.

Fujikawa shot rounds of 71 and 70, for a 141 total and topped David Havens of Lahaina, Maui, by a stroke for the sectional's lone berth into the U.S. Open. There were 10 golfers in the Kauai qualifier.

Fujikawa won't be the youngest to play at the Open, though. Tyrell Garth was 14 when he played the tournament in 1941.

Fujikawa, who finished third at the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA, will play in the U.S. Open, June 15 to 18 at Winged Foot Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

Dean Wilson, a former Kaneohe resident, shot rounds of 69-69—138 at the Brookside Golf and Country Club and Lakes Golf and Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, to also qualify for the U.S. Open.

Sean Maekawa, a junior at Honokaa, competed at the same site as Wilson, but failed to qualify. Maekawa shot 70-79—149.
