1897: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that Hilo will probably soon have a quick steamship connection with San Francisco. "The importance of the town as a shipping port for the rapidly growing industry of coffee production demands direct steamer communication," the paper reported.
1942: Adm. Chester Nimitz announces victory over the Japanese fleet in the Battle of Midway.
1943: More than 1,700 Hawai'i residents of Japanese ancestry present a check for $10,340 to the U.S. government for "bombs on Tokyo." The check was "a monetary expression of their condemnation of Japan's murder of American fliers who were prisoners of war," The Advertiser reported.
1950: A sixth lava flow begins moving down Mauna Loa's slopes.
1957: Gov. Samuel Wilder King signs a bill abolishing the death penalty in Hawai'i. The last civilian to be executed in Hawai'i was Adriano Domingo, who was hanged on Jan. 7, 1944, for murder. In all, 46 civilians were executed in Hawai'i for murder.
1966: Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and her two children arrive in Hawai'i for a six-week visit. A crowd of 4,000 greets her at the airport.
1967: Oliver Lee is denied tenure at the University of Hawai'i. The university said the controversial professor was being dismissed because of his actions as faculty adviser for the Student Partisan Alliance.
1968: Sen. Robert F. Kennedy is shot in Los Angeles by Sirhan Sirhan. Kennedy dies the next day.
2004: Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the United States, dies at the age of 93.
