Lambert, Metzger place third in Croatia

Punahou School graduates Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger finished third yesterday in the Swatch-Federation Internationale de Volleyball world tour event at Zagreb, Croatia.

Lambert and Metzger, seeded 19th, defeated Roberto Lopes and Pedro Salgado of Brazil, 21-13, 16-21, 15-7, in the bronze-medal match. Lambert and Metzger will share $16,000.

Brazil's Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos won the event while Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh captured the women's FIVB tournament in Athens.

UYEHARA TRIUMPHS

After needing 31 putts to complete a final-round 2-over 74, Craig Uyehara drained a 50-foot birdie to beat Jarrett Young in a playoff and capture the Amatour Hawai'i Coral Creek Classic yesterday.

Uyehara and Young (73) tied after 36 holes with 2-over 146.

Wendell Kop (75), Mitchell Murata (74), Michael Sato (74), Reyn Tanaka (73) and defending champion Travis Toyama (74) tied for third at 147.

LAJOLA FALLS IN FRANCE

Sixth-seeded Jonathan Eysseric of France beat 'Aiea's Dennis Lajola, 6-4, 6-2, yesterday in a first-round match of the French Open Juniors.
