Grand jury indicts man in 'Lost' actor robbery

A 21-year-old man was indicted by the O'ahu grand jury today on charges of committing five home-invasion robberies, including the armed hold up of "Lost" television actor Josh Holloway and his wife, Yessica, at their Hawai'i Kai home Oct. 12 last year.

Circuit Judge Derrick Chan approved a request by city prosecutors to set bail at $1 million for Ruben E. Royce, who is being held at the O'ahu Community Correctional Center awaiting trial on felony charges unrelated to today's indictment.

In asking for the high bail, city Deputy Prosecutor Maurice Arrisgado told Chan that Royce went on a "crime spree" from Sept. 28 to Oct. 18, when he was arrested. During that period, he was involved in home invasion robberies around the island, Arrisgado said.

Royce will plead not guilty when he is arraigned later, Deputy Public Defender Theresa Marshall said.

"We look forward to the evidence that the state will produce," she said.

The grand jury returned the indictment after the third session in the case. Holloway testified before the grand jurors at a previous session last month.

The charges against Royce include armed robbery, first-degree burglary and attempted second-degree murder for alleging firing a gun during one of the home invasions, but not the one involving the Holloways.

The grand jury also indicted Chanhthay Khuonkeo as an accomplice in two of the cases, but not in the Holloway robbery. Arrisgado said Khuonkeo acted as a driver and back-up man for Royce.

Khuonkeo's bail was set at $100,000.
