HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — Hawai'i's Michelle Wie birdied three of her last four holes to shoot a 1-under-par 71 Thursday in the opening round of the McDonald's LPGA Championship.

The second major of the LPGA season is being played at Bulle Rock Golf Course just north of Baltimore.

"I felt like I played really well today ... 71 feels like a good score because I felt like I was playing well all day," said Wie, who was second here a year ago. "I couldn't really get anything going, but the last four holes seemed like I was back to normal. Hopefully tomorrow morning I can keep that going."

Wie, who will be a senior at Punahou in the fall, is seven behind leader Nicole Castrale.

Wie needed three hours to erase a double bogey on the fifth hole. She hit her drive into the right rough, hit her second shot in the rough fronting the green and came up short on her third. Her putt from off the green went three feet by the hole and she missed the bogey putt coming back.

Her first birdie came on the ninth hole where she dropped in a 15-footer.

She gave that back with a three-putt bogey on the 12th but closed with a flourish.

Wie two-putted the par-5 15th for birdie and dropped a six-footer on the next hole to get back to even par. She barely missed from 18 feet on the par-3 17th, then stuck her approach shot three feet left of the 18th pin and closed with birdie.

The 72-hole tournament ends Sunday, with a cut after Friday's second round.

Wie has five top-5 finishes in her past seven LPGA starts. This is her 28th LPGA event and she hasn't missed a cut since she was 13.

The Golf Channel will broadcast all four rounds of the Championship live, starting from 10 a.m. HST.

Wie will again play with Turtle Bay's Dorothy Delasin Friday, beginning at 1:37 a.m. Hawaii time. Delasin fired a 5-under 67 and is tied for fourth.

Delasin's caddie is former University of Hawai'i-Hilo golfer Clint Begay.
