Chemical odor reported in Waipahu

Advertiser Staff

Residents of an apartment building at 94-120 Pupukahi St. in Waipahu have been evacuated as a precaution while emergency response workers try to determine the cause of a chemical odor in the area.

Honolulu Fire Capt. Sigmund Oka said it appears that a container of Malathion, a pesticide, was dumped at the base of a tree in front of the building.

Oka said tests are under way to try to identify exactly what the source of the odor is.

He said city paramedics examined several people who live in the apartment building, none of whom wanted to be transported to a hospital for further evaluation.
