Wie shoots 68; 2nd round suspended

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. — Hawai'i's Michelle Wie closed on the leaders at the second round of the McDonald's LPGA Championship this morning, shooting a 4-under-par 68 before rain, lightening and darkness suspended play at at Bulle Rock Golf Course.

Wie, 16, is 5-under midway through the LPGA's second major of the year. She finished second to Annika Sorenstam here a year ago.

When Wie finished this morning she was a shot behind clubhouse leader Dorothy Delasin. The Turtle Bay representative played with Wie the first two days. Delasin, whose caddie is former University of Hawai'i-Hilo golfer Clint Begay, got as low as 10-under this morning, but played her final seven holes in 4-over.

She was overtaken by Pat Hurst, who moved to 8-under with birdies on two of her first three holes before players were taken off the course before rain and lightening suspended play for about five hours.

Sorenstam played one hole right after lunch, and when she got to the second tee it was almost time for dinner. She made two birdies and was 3 under through eight holes when the second round was suspended by darkness.

It will resume tomorrow morning, with 70 players of the 150-player field still to complete their round. The delay was so long that Natalie Gulbis finished her round of 73 some 10 hours after she started.

Wie, who birdied three of her last four holes Thursday, opened with birdie on her first hole (No. 10) this morning. She sank a nine-footer there, but missed from inside 15 feet on the next hole. She bogeyed the 17th, missing an eight-foot par putt, but made birdie putts of 15 and 20 feet at Nos. 15 and 18.

Delasin charged into the lead with four straight birdies around the turn, sinking putts from inside 15 feet at Nos. 17, 18, 1 and 2. Wie matched her on the first two holes of the front nine, hitting her approach to 12 feet on the first and chipping to three feet on the par-5 second.

"You know, Dorothy making a lot of putts, it was like, 'Oh, the ball can go in the hole,' " Wie recalled. "So it gave me confidence too. She played great out there."

Wie teed off early with a gallery of about 100. That grew to nearly 500 at the turn and was about 1,000 by the time she and Delasin came in. Wie didn't disappoint.

"I left a lot of putts out there," she admitted. "But I still feel like I'm stroking it really well. These greens are just very tricky. They put the holes in very tricky areas. So I felt like I was playing really well. Hopefully I'll get some more putts to drop in. But obviously today I made a lot more putts than I did yesterday. So I think that if I keep this trend going I'll be fine."
