'Legends' capture volleyball nationals

Hawai'i residents Jon Stanley and Dennis Chai, and former Hawai'i resident Richard Leong helped the "Quiksilver Legends" team win the USA Volleyball Open Men's 60 championship for the second straight year on June 2 in New Orleans.
The Legends took first place among 14 teams from around the nation and world, including the runner-up team from Brazil. Stanley, of Hawai'i Kai, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Leong, who now lives in Albuquerque, N.M., was named to the All-Tournament team.
Chai is from Kane'ohe.
Stanley, a former Olympian, also played on the Outrigger Canoe Club's team that finished second in the Men's 45 division. Team members were Stanley, Jon Anderson, Kilo Baird, T.C. Gray, Marc Haine, Tom Harrer, John Hedlund, Alan Lau, Barney Robinson, Ralph Smith and Tim Walstin.
The three 60s players from Hawai'i joined five other players from around the country, including former Brigham Young University and U.S. Olympic coach Carl McGown, to form the Quiksilver team.
BOXING
SMOKER SET FOR PALOLO
A USA-Boxing Hawai'i/ Palolo B.C. and Kawano B.C. Smoker is scheduled for 6 p.m. on June 17 at Palolo District Park.
Admission is $10 for a scheduled 18-bout card, which includes some of Hawai'i's Junior Olympic boxers.
