Man charged for semi-automatic rifle

A 27-year-old man was charged by police Saturday with possession of a MAK-90 semi-automatic rifle.

Joseph Calarruda allegedly brought the rifle and ammunition to his Hanua Street workplace at Campbell Industrial Park on Friday at 6:30 a.m. Employees took the rifle from him, police said.

Calarruda was arrested for multiple firearm offenses but so far charged only with possession of a prohibted firearm and ammunition. Police seized a illegal banana-style magazine clip during the arrest. He is being held at HPD's central receiving cellblock in lieu of $40,000 bail.

His appearance at District Court is scheduled for Tuesday.

Moped crash victim identified

The medical examiner's office today identified the man killed Wednesday night when his moped was rear-ended on Kamehameha Highway near the entrance to the Helemano military housing area as Juan Carvallo, 27, of Hale'iwa.

The collision occurred at 11:20 p.m. and Carvallo was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was O'ahu's 46th traffic fatality of the year.

Big Island accident victim named

A 67-year-old Kurtistown man who died Thursday from injuries suffered in a two-truck crash at the intersection of Route 11 and Huina Road was identified by Big Island police as Stanley S. Shibuya.

Police said Shibuya's 1998 Dodge pickup was struck by a 1992 Mazda pickup, whose claimed brake problems preventing him from stopping.

The collision was reported at 6:10 a.m. Shibuya died at Hilo Medical Center at 9:37 a.m. The driver of the Mazda pickup was not injured.

The death was the Big Island's 15th traffic fatality of the year.
