If you're out and about, and need to remove your jewelry — maybe a clasp breaks, or your fingers swell — don't just wrap the jewelry in a scrap of paper or a napkin, said reader Laure Lee of Salt Lake. She suggests wrapping the jewelry in money, ideally a $20 bill.

"That way, it won't get accidentally thrown out as rubbish," Lee said. "Just be sure not to leave wadded-up bills as tips — your wedding ring may be in there!"

Have your parents help you write and deliver letters to your neighbors asking if they would save HI-5 containers for you. Offer to pick items up on a certain day and time. Explain to neighbors you'll keep half of your earnings and donate the rest to charity. "This will make you and your neighbors feel you are doing good for the earth and other people," Bowman said.
