Kono qualifies for U.S. Women's Open

Stephanie Kono, 16, qualified for the U.S. Women's Open today by convincingly winning the U.S. Open Sectional at Ko Olina Golf Club.

Kono, a Punahou School junior-to-be, shot 74-75—149 to gain the lone qualifying spot for the event to be held June 29 to July 2 at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island.

Kono beat three others – Miki Ueoka, Dawn Kaneshiro and Lori Planos.

Ueoka shot 79-76–155 and is the first alternate. Kaneshiro shot 80-78—158 and Planos 81-78—159.

Kono will join two other Hawai'i teenagers at the Open. Michelle Wie, 16, received a special exemption and former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim, 14, recently qualified at another sectional.
