Honolulu firefighters are battling a large fire at University Lab School on Metcalf Street, fire officials said.

As of 4:45 p.m., the fire had destroyed the west wing of a campus building, known as the University Elementary School building. It no longer has classrooms but houses the school's music program, a theater and physical education department.

The fire was spreading toward the part of the building the houses offices for the University of Hawai'i College of Education.

The building dates back to about 1940.

No injuries were reported.

About 50 firefighters from 11 fire companies responded to the 3:48 p.m. alarm.

The only person in the building when the fire started was athletic director Jim Bukes. He got out and called 911.
