GET THE DIRT ON COSMETICS AT SKIN DEEP

Before you head to the cosmetics counter, go to Skin Deep, an easy-to-navigate personal-care product safety guide set up by the Environmental Working Group.

Since the FDA can't mandate safety studies of cosmetics, there is no industrywide safety standard for personal-care products. So how do you know if that moisturizer or mousse does more good than harm? Skin Deep has information and safety ratings for 14,406 products, 1,004 brands and 6,959 ingredients. You can browse by product (such as Revlon mascara) or product type (such as shampoo or eye shadow).
