Man, 58, drowns near beach hotel

A 58-year-old man drowned in waters near the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Sunday morning, Big Island Fire Department officials said yesterday.

The unidentified visitor was discovered face down by his wife and was taken ashore by hotel lifeguards.

He was treated by four vacationing physicians, officials said.

The man was later pronounced dead at North Hawaii Community Hospital.




HONOLULU

MAN'S BODY FOUND AT SAND ISLAND

The body of a man in his 50s was discovered at a makeshift camp on Sand Island Access Road yesterday morning, police said.

The discovery was made at about 6:30 a.m., about a half-mile east of the Marine Education Center.

The body was in a "mummified" state of decomposition, with the head detached, police said.

Police are investigating the cause of death.

FILIPINO WRITER TO READ KIDS' BOOK

Anthony D. Robles, a Filipino-American children's book author and poet, will read aloud from his new bilingual picture-book, "Lakas and the Makibaka Hotel" at 2 p.m. June 30 at the Waipahu Public Library. The 45-minute program is recommended for all ages.
