Hawai'i to host 2008 AYSO nationals

Hawai'i will host the American Youth Soccer Organization's National Games in July of 2008, according to an AYSO release.

The nationals are held every two years and Hawai'i, which hosted in 2002, was awarded the 2008 host role at AYSO's national meeting over the Memorial Day weekend in Orlando, Fla.

The 2008 nationals will be held July 6 to 13 at the Waipi'o Soccer Complex.

This 2006 nationals will be played in Chicago, with 15 teams from Hawai'i joining the 192-team field of 11- to 19-year-olds.


GOLF

CHING, MERKLE QUALIFY

Alex Ching, who recently completed his sophomore year at Punahou School, and Kristina Merkle, who just finished her freshman year at Moanalua High School, earned berths in the Trusted Choice Big "I" Junior Classic yesterday.

Ching shot a 6-under 66 at the Honolulu Country Club to top a field of 48 players in the boys 12-18 division. Chan Kim (70) will be the first alternate and Bradley Shigezawa (70) the second alternate to the tournament that will be held July 30 to Aug. 3 in Odessa, Texas.

Merkle won a playoff against Britney Choy and Randi Ono after all shot 75 to lead a 24-player field. On the first playoff hole, Merkle and Choy each made birdie while Ono made par. Merkle then birdied the second playoff hole to earn the berth.


TENNIS

GORA, TATEISHI WIN

Kalei Gora, a three-time state high school champion while at St. Francis, and Skyler Tateishi, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion at Punahou, won the 18 singles titles of the USTA Aloha Airlines Junior Sectionals on Sunday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Gora beat Kamehameha's Brooke Doane, 6-1, 6-2, in a rematch of this year's state final, and Tateishi defeated Jonell Magdaong of Lahaina, 6-2, 6-1.

Other division winners were: Kristin Lim (girls 16), Kelsey Daguio (girls 14), Karlene Pang (girls 12) and Chas Okamoto (boys 12). Finals for boys 16 and 14 were not available.


PREP FOOTBALL

ISLE PLAYERS CAMPING

Twenty-four players from O'ahu high schools will participate in five football camps within a two-week period as part of a Hawai'i Athletes In Action Group, according to the organization's founder and president Lua Tuiasosopo.

The group left Sunday with its first camp running Thursday through Saturday at the All-Poly Camp in Utah. The next camp is June 19 to 20 at the University of Utah, followed by a one-day camp on June 21 at Brigham Young. The group then goes to the Max Emfinger/Kava Bowl Combine in Utah on June 24 and the University of Washington's camp, June 25 to 27.

As part of the package, the players will take part in the Game Plan Education First workshop from July 5 to 8 at Brigham Young-Hawai'i for SAT preparation courses.
