Firefighters monitor Lab School; damages top $6 million

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters continued to douse hotspots this morning at the University of Hawai'i Lab School, where a 67-year-old wooden building went up in flames yesterday.

Fire Department spokesman Kenison Tejada said the flare-ups were not serious and did not spread to other buildings. "There's normally going to be one or two flare-ups in a building this size," he said.

Damage to the building is estimated at $6 million, Tejada said, with damage to its contents estimated at $500,000.

Summer school classes were held at the campus today, and preschool was also in session.

The fire started about 3:48 p.m. yesterday, sending dark smoke billowing over Honolulu. About 8 this morning, the structure was still smoldering and firefighters were watching it closely.

Tejada said there will likely be firefighters posted at the school throughout the day and into the night. Fire investigators were also searching through the rubble this morning.
