1924: Four Filipino leaders of the ongoing sugar strike are indicted by a Territorial grand jury on a charge of conspiracy to burn down the Oahu Sugar Co. mill at Waipahu. The indictments were signed by Walter F. Dillingham, foreman of the grand jury.
1943: The U.S. War Information Office discloses for the first time that a Nazi espionage agent gave information to the Japanese Consulate in Hawai'i about the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor just four days before the Dec. 7, 1941, attack. The information was given to the consulate via a series of signals that included a display of lights in the windows of the agent's houses in Kalama and Lanikai.
1946: The Territory of Hawai'i seizes control of the Matsonia so food and perishables can be unloaded. A dockworker dispute had halted unloading two days earlier.
1949: The Navy announces it will supply flour, shortening and salt from its stores on O'ahu to bakeries, which are short of supplies because of the dock strike that began May 1.
1960: A fiery explosion rocks the $50 million nuclear sub-marine Sargo at its berth in Pearl Harbor. The sub was deliberately submerged with its stern torpedo room hatch open to put out the fire. One sailor was killed.
1985: The four-week-long United Airlines strike ends when pilots ratify a new contract and flight attendants announce they will return to work. It was estimated that the strike cost Hawai'i $100 million in lost revenue.
