ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Kiddie shows love Hawai'i

Advertiser Staff and News Services

First there was fuzzy Grover dropping in on local kids dancing hula. Then there were the sea dragons Maui and Lanai on "Dragon Tales." Jack Johnson's "Upside Down" video, shot partly off Portlock, was a Noggin mainstay this year.

The latest evidence that preschool-TV programmers have Hawai'i on the brain: the heroes of the animated series "The Wonder Pets" head to the Islands to rescue a baby dolphin.

See it in rotation on Nick Jr./Noggin.

REMEMBERING DEAR OLD DAD

Father's Day was first celebrated in 1909, when Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War vet who raised his six children on a farm. More Father's Day facts from the Census Bureau:

  • There are about 66 million fathers across the nation.

  • Neckties lead the list of Father's Day gifts. Next: tools and sporting equipment.

  • Single fathers are on the rise. Today there are about 2.3 million single dads, up from 400,000 in 1970.

    FINAL WORD

"I learn things from my kids constantly. Most of their knowledge comes from Snapple caps, but they keep me in touch with important things like 'High School Musical' and MySpace."
