Fourteen UH athletes honored by MPSF

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced its academic scholar-athletes for the 2006 women's water polo and men's volleyball seasons with 14 from the University of Hawai'i making the list.

The UH water polo team had nine, including sophomore Iefke Van Belkum, the MPSF's Player of the Year. Van Belkum earned a 3.21 grade point average in economics. Joining her on the all-academic team were Amy Logan (3.64), Meike De Nooy (3.49), Robin Harney (3.36), Shannon Carroll (3.32), Anna Sieprath (3.24), Kristin Swanson (3.24), Jen Hohl (3.22) and Kristy Bagnall (3.16). The Rainbow Wahine tied with Arizona State for most scholar-athletes with nine.

The men's volleyball team was led by junior Lauri Hakala with a 3.81 GPA in pre-business. Hakala was also an Academic All-District VIII Men's At-Large first-team selection last month. Other Warriors selected were Kyle Klinger (3.66), Matt Carere (3.40), Matt Bender (3.28) and Eric Kalima (3.18).

MAEKAWA; OKINO, UEOKA LEAD JUNIORS

Sean Maekawa of Pa'auilo leads the boys division, and Honolulu's Cyd Okino and Lihue, Kaua'i's Miki Ueoka were atop the girls division of the Westfield Aloha Section Junior PGA Championship yesterday at Honolulu Country Club.

Maekawa shot a 3-under 69 and leads Kamuela's Max Bonk by one stroke.

Okino and Ueoka are tied at 3-over 75.

The final round starts at 7 a.m. today.
