Two military aviators have been designated to attempt the first flight from the West Coast to Hawai'i, the June 18, 1927, Advertiser reported.

1901: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that fires have been burning on the slopes on Tantalus and Punchbowl as a result of the destruction of the eucalyptus forest on the federal reservation.

1938: Fire destroys six buildings in downtown Hilo, injures two seriously and causes damage estimated at $300,000. The fire started in the Vanity Beauty Shoppe when a gallon jug of gasoline broke and spilled over a gasoline heater.

1971: Matsuo Takabuki is appointed a Bishop Estate trustee.
