Big Island school library burglarized

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i - Someone broke into the Waiakea Intermediate School library over the weekend and stole computer components before setting a fire that did "minimal" damage, police said.

Big Island police said officers were called to the school on Puainako Street at 8:15 a.m. Sunday after an employee discovered the break-in.

The fire apparently went out on its own, causing little damage to the library or its contents, police said. No dollar estimate of the damage was available.

An April 11 fire at Waiakea High School adjoining the intermediate school campus did an estimated $1.5 million damage to the high school's administration building. That was the third deliberately set fire on the high school campus this year.

Police said they do not know if there is any link between the intermediate school fire and the series of fires at the high school.

Police said anyone with information on the case may call police Detective Greg Esteban at 961-2384.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in East Hawai'i or 329-8181 in West Hawai'i. Calls to Crime Stoppers are kept confidential and are not recorded.
