CPR, oxygen fail to revive diver

A diver on the shoreline along Kalaniana'ole Avenue on the Big Island apparently drowned after his snorkel filled with water yesterday afternoon, the Hawai'i County Fire Department said.

The diver had no pulse and was not breathing when a passerby administered CPR. Fire personnel began CPR, as well as oxygen therapy, after they arrived just before 1:30 p.m. The diver was taken to Hilo Hospital unconscious, the Fire Department said.

CHILD BLAMED IN 'EWA BEACH FIRE

A child playing with a lighter or matches started an 'Ewa Beach fire Saturday that caused $60,000 damage to a townhouse at 91-627 Kilaha St., according to HFD Capt. Jerry Spencer.

The fire was reported at 4:21 p.m. Damage to the townhouse in Wai'anae from the Saturday night fire is estimated at $15,000 to the structure and $5,000 to contents, said Spencer. The cause of the 6:23 p.m. fire at 85-658 Farrington Highway is under investigation.

The Hawai'i chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the people displaced by the fires.



KEIKI SEA TURTLE PROGRAM JULY 1

Kapolei Public Library is hosting "Super Sea Turtles," a free one-hour program for children by Sea Life Park's senior education associate Nicole Quiocho, at 10:30 a.m. July 1.

The program will be held in the library's children's room.

Kapolei Library is also offering a summer series of free 45-minute storytime programs at 10 a.m. for toddlers, ages 2 and 3, on Mondays, and for children of all ages on Thursdays and Saturdays (except July 1 and 22).

The summer programs run through Aug. 26 and children must be accompanied by parents or caregivers. Registration is not required. Call Kapolei Library at 693-7050.
