Police Beat: Retired officer spots car break-in

Advertiser Staff

Two men picked the wrong time and place to break into a car in Wai'anae yesterday afternoon.

A retired police officer told police that at about 5 p.m. he saw a vehicle drive up to a parked car. A passenger then reportedly got out of the car, broke into the parked car and later left the scene in the car he had arrived in.

Police said the retired officer called police with the license number of the car and a description of the man he said he saw break into the parked car.

Within 20 minutes, uniformed officers located the car in Wai'anae and ordered the driver to pull over. The passenger jumped out and ran but the driver was detained.

The owner of the parked car was taken to the scene of the traffic stop where he identified items inside the car as his belongings.

Police then arrested the driver on suspicion of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle. The man who jumped from the car and ran remained at large today, police said.

Two arrests in shoplifting incident

Police arrested two women last night after they allegedly stole more than $1,500 worth of children's and baby clothes from the Macy's store at Pearlridge Shopping Center.

Store security officers told police they watched the two women men leave the store about 6:35 p.m. without paying for the clothing and apprehended the pair.

They were detained at the store until police arrived to arrest them on suspicion of second-degree theft.
