Diver dies at Big Island beach

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — A 23-year-old Hilo man died yesterday while diving at Leleiwi Beach Park in Keaukaha, the second apparent drowning at the beach park this week.

Paul Lam, who police said was a recent graduate from the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, had been free diving and taking pictures before he was reported missing at 2:03 p.m.

Bodyboarders found Lam floating face down at Four-Mile Beach at around 2:40 p.m., and a Fire Department rescue helicopter airlifted him out of the water. Fire Department personnel tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.

Lam was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 p.m.

In the earlier incident, Yoseph Albos, 47, also of Hilo, apparently drowned Sunday while diving at Leleiwi.
