Pascual earns academic honor

Maryland senior gymnast Mandy Pascual, a 2001 Punahou graduate from 'Aiea, was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large (University Division) third team.

Pascual graduated cum laude with a degree in biochemistry in May and maintained a 3.89 cumulative GPA. She also earned a degree in chemical engineering in May 2005, graduating magna cum laude.


  • Highland Community College (Kan.) sophomore outfielder Dylan Libadisos ('Aiea '04) was a National Junior College Athletic Association All-America Division I honorable-mention selection.


  • Pepperdine junior outside hitter Jon Grobe (Iolani '02 of Kane'ohe) was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference team.

    Grobe earned a 3.12 GPA in public relations.

    He started 21 of 24 matches, recording 181 kills with 46 blocks in his first season as a starter.


  • UC Santa Barbara junior attacker Allison Carkin (Mid-Pacific of Honolulu) was named an Academic Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Scholar-Athlete. Carkin earned a 3.67 GPA in Law and Society.

  • Lindenwood (Mo.) junior Erin Nakamoto (Kalani '03) was named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association All-Academic Team. Nakamoto had a 3.83 GPA and earned an "outstanding" distinction.

    Lindenwood sophomore Mandy Chun (Iolani '04) earned "superior" honors for her 3.52 GPA.


  • Recent University High graduate Justine Jeremiah will play volleyball for Graceland University (Iowa), according to Doris Sullivan, the director of Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance.

  • Recent Castle High graduate Cheynah Farley signed to play softball at Eastern Arizona Junior College and Castle classmate Kelly Nishitomi will play softball for Pacific University, according to their Mililani Prep coach Glenn Jicha.
