Choy, Ueoka, Kim qualify for national golf tourney

Britney Choy earned medalist honors and Miki Ueoka and Kyung Kim grabbed the other two qualifying spots Tuesday at the USGA Girls Junior qualifier.

Choy, a Leilehua graduate who will play for New Mexico in the fall, shot 1-over-par 73 at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course. Ueoka, who will be a senior at Kaua'i High in the fall, was second at 79. Wailuku's Kyung Kim won a four-way playoff for the final spot with par on the second extra hole, after shooting 82.

Alternates are Kaua'i's Kelli Oride and Honolulu's Kristina Merkle.

The national championship will be July 17 to 22 at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. At 6,400 yards, it will be the longest layout in history.


SOFTBALL

UH CAMPS IN JULY

University of Hawai'i softball will hold two summer camps.

The first is July 12 to 14, for beginners ages 8 to 12. Camp runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and costs $100. It will cover basic fundamentals, such as hitting, fielding, throwing and base running.

The second camp is for advanced players. It offers fielding July 19, hitting July 20 and pitching July 21. Cost is $35 per day and participants can choose any or all days. Pitchers must bring their own catchers.

The camps will be held at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Parents are welcome.

The camps are run by Rainbow Wahine assistant coach Dee Wisneski, with help from current and former players. For more information, contact Wisneski at 956-9227 or uhsb@hawaii.edu

CHANG'S PHOTO MISSING

The photo of Kamehameha pitcher junior Kapono Chang was missing from Tuesday's Baseball All-State first-team layout. Another player's photo ran with Chang's name in some editions.


BASKETBALL

PETERSEN PROMOTED

Former University of Hawai'i women's basketball assistant coach Gavin Petersen has been promoted to associate head coach of the Idaho State women's program, the school announced yesterday.

Petersen, who joined the ISU staff in July of 2004, has helped the Bengals to two straight Big Sky Conference Tournament semifinal appearances, including a Big Sky regular season title this past season.

Idaho State is coached by former Hawai'i assistant Jon Newlee.

Prior to Idaho State, Petersen served as UH assistant women's basketball coach for two seasons. He also spent time as a team manager at UH.

Petersen graduated from University High School in 1995, and Hawai'i Pacific University in 1999.


BOXING

SEVEN AT JR. OLYMPICS

Seven boxers from Hawai'i will compete in the National Junior Olympics, starting Sunday in Marquette, Mich.

The Hawai'i boxers are: Iber Ikaika (90 pounds) and Gino Ramos (106) of Kawano Boxing Club; Thomas Juan (101) of Wailuku Boxing Club; Taylor Rodrigues (114) and Jentson Gumtang (119) of East Maui Boxing Club; and Antone Pereira (132) and Sa-fire Pereira (110) of Wai'anae Boxing Club.
