Clay holds decathlon lead at U.S. Outdoors meet

World champion Bryan Clay of Hawai'i led the decathlon through five events at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis on Friday.

Clay, the two-time defending U.S. outdoors champion, amassed 4,394 points. Former world champ Tom Pappas was second with 4,342, followed by Trey Hardee with 4,162 and Chris Boyles 4,067.

Clay was 160 points off his first-day personal best. He was dizzy and had to be helped off the track after winning his heat in his last event of the day, the 400. Low blood sugar was blamed and he was expected to be fine for the final five events on Saturday, his agent said.

Clay won the 100 meters in 10.49 seconds. He was second in the 400 meters and took third in the long jump, shot put and high jump. Pappas won the long jump and shot put.

Clay, a 1998 Castle High alum, is the 2005 World Outdoor champ and silver medalist in the 2004 Olympics. He currently lives in Glendora, Calif.
