Andy Irons wins in Mexico

Andy Irons of Kaua'i won the Rip Curl Pro Search men's surfing contest on Friday.

The final day of the event was completed in 3- to 6-foot waves at La Jolla, Mexico.

Irons won four heats today, capped by a convincing victory over California's Taylor Knox in the one-on-one final. Irons' best two waves received a total of 16.86 points to Knox's 11.33.

Irons also eliminated his younger brother, Bruce, in the quarterfinals.

Andy Irons, a three-time former world champion, received $30,000 for the victory. It was the first victory of the year for Irons, who is now ranked No. 2 on the 2006 World Championship Tour. Defending champ Kelly Slater of Florida is No. 1.
