Irons brothers advance at surf meet in Mexico

Kaua'i brothers Andy and Bruce Irons advanced to the fourth round of the Rip Curl Search men's surfing contest yesterday.
The third round was completed in 4-foot waves at La Jolla, Mexico.
Bruce Irons had one of the best waves of the day in his third-round victory over Australian Mick Lowe. He received a score of 9.73 (out of 10) for a long barrel ride.
Andy Irons easily defeated Brazil's Jihad Khodr in the third round, 14.74-5.0.
The Irons brothers are the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the contest.
Two other Hawai'i surfers were eliminated yesterday. Mililani's Kekoa Bacalso lost to defending world champion Kelly Slater of Florida, 18.17-15.3.
Pancho Sullivan of O'ahu's North Shore lost to Florida's C.J. Hobgood, 18.3-15.0.
The contest is the fifth of 11 stops on the 2006 World Championship Tour.
BASEBALL
SUZUKI'S STAR RISING
Maui's Kurt Suzuki has been named to the United States team for the eighth annual All-Star Futures Game on July 9 in Pittsburgh.
Suzuki, a 2001 Baldwin High graduate, is a catcher for the Oakland Athletics' Double-A affiliate at Midland (Texas). Through Sunday, he was batting .301 with 18 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 33 RBIs. Last night, he had eight RBIs after batting 3 for 5 with a grand slam in a 15-10 win at Tulsa.
The Futures Game coincides with the Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 10 in Pittsburgh. The game features minor league prospects divided into teams with players from the U.S. and another with players from the rest of the world.
SHOOTING
TANOUE 3RD IN NATIONALS
Honolulu's Ryan Tanoue took third at the 2006 USA Shooting National Championships earlier this month in Fort Benning, Ga. Tanoue, competing in 10-meter Air Rifle, finished behind Jason Parker and Matt Emmons.
Parker earned 1,293.9 points, with Emmons at 1,286.2. Tanoue, a Saint Louis School graduate and four-time All-American at Nevada, was a point back of Emmons and seven points ahead of the fourth-place finisher. There were 90 men in the competition.
Punahou School graduate Heather Horn, who will be a freshman at Nevada in the fall, finished 39th with a score of 381 in the women's 10-meter air rifle.
PADDLING
DOLAN PLACES SEVENTH
Kailua's Patrick Dolan placed seventh in the 1,000-meter K-1 race of the 54th International Ruhr Regatta last weekend at Bochum, Germany.
Dolan was the only American male to reach a final in the K-1 (one-person kayak) races. He also reached the semifinals of the 500-meter K-1 race.
Dolan was one of 11 paddlers representing Team USA at the junior event. More than 1,200 paddlers age 18 and younger from around the world participated in the week-long regatta.
TELEVISION
LEAHEYS BACK ON THE AIR
The "Leahey and Leahey" show, featuring father-son sportcasters Jim and Kanoa Leahey, is resurfacing as a 30-minute television show Wednesdays on KHET.
The first show airs July 12, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Jim Leahey said KHET has committed to producing a minimum of 13 shows.
University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones will be the first guest and a series regular.
"They're very good at what they do, and I enjoy working with them," Jones said.
Jim Leahey, 63, is play-by-play announcer for K5, which owns the television rights to UH sports.
Kanoa Leahey, 28, is sports director at KHON, which produced the "June Jones Show" last year.
"Leahey and Leahey" had two successful runs on KKEA (now known as ESPN 1420). But the Leaheys decided to end the radio show last summer following a dispute with KKEA management.

GOT A NEED FOR SPEED?
The Hawai'i Speed and Quickness summer series continues with sessions tomorrow and Sunday at the University of Hawai'i athletic complex.
Current and former UH athletes will serve as instructors.
The $10 fee includes instruction in plyometrics and resistance training.
Sessions are 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. for ages 7 to 12, and 10:30 a.m. to noon for those 13 and older.
