Four Hawai'i golfers who qualified for match play easily won their first-round matches yesterday to advance to the round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in Pueblo, Colo.

Kimberly Kim, a 14-year-old former Big Island resident now residing in Mesa, Ariz., led the way with a 7-and-6 victory over Anya Sarai Alvarez, of Tulsa, Okla.

Kim shot 3-under 33 on the front nine, winning 7 of the 9 holes at the par-72, 6,263-yard Walking Stick Golf Course. Alvarez could not close the gap on the back nine, and when both parred the par-3 No. 12, the match was over.

Mari Chun, a 2005 Kamehameha Schools graduate and Stanford University student, trounced Tamasin Clelland, of New Zealand, 6 and 5.

Chun shot 2-under 34 on the front nine, making the turn 3-up. She won the 11th with par, the 12th with bogey and the 13th with birdie to close out the match.

Amanda Wilson, a 2005 Waiakea High graduate and University of Arizona student, defeated Melanie DeLeon, of Santa Clarita, Calif., 4 and 3.

Wilson won the first three holes, and made the turn 2-up. She won the par-3, 163-yard 12th with birdie and the par-4, 366-yard 14th with par, then won by matching DeLeon's par on the 15th.

Stephanie Kono, a 16-year-old junior-to-be at Punahou School, beat Kelly Jacques, of Longmont, Colo., 4 and 2.

Kono won the par-5, 510-yard fourth with birdie, then gave it back when she bogeyed the par-3, 159-yard sixth. She moved ahead with a birdie on No. 7, then moved 3-up after winning Nos. 10 and 12. Jacques won No. 14 when Kono double-bogeyed the par-4 hole, but Kono closed out the match by winning No. 15 with birdie and No. 16 with par.

Among the notables also advancing were co-medalists Hannah Jun, 20, of San Diego, and Mina Harigae, 16, of Monterey, Calif.

Jun, who will be a junior at UCLA in the fall, cruised to a 4-and-3 victory over 16-year-old Kristen Schelling of Mesa, Ariz.

Harigae rallied from being 1-down at the turn to eliminate 18-year-old Chelsey Collins, of Louisville, Colo., 2 and 1.

Harigae will meet Hawai'i's Chun in today's first match of the round of 32, starting at 7:30 a.m. (3:30 Hawai'i time).

This morning's survivors will play in the round of 16 in the afternoon.
