Hawai'i gymnasts place at Elite Challenge

 •  Summer track program offers kids freedom, fun

Six athletes from Hawai'i placed at the USA-Gymnastics Elite Challenge recently in Las Vegas.

The competition, which featured more than 200 gymnasts competing in tumbling and trampoline, was the second of three national competitions. The U.S. Championships, which will be July 6 to 9, will determine final rankings for 2006 and U.S. National team assignments for future competitions.

The Hawai'i competitors were:

  • Matt Moniz, a 19-year-old freshman at Leeward Community College, who placed fourth on double mini-tramp and 10th on trampoline in the Senior Elite (level 12, 18-over) division.

  • Kira Vercruyssen, a 19-year-old freshman at Honolulu Community College, placed 14th on trampoline in the pre-elite (level 10, all ages) division.

  • Spencer Dupio, a 15-year-old sophomore at Roosevelt High School, placed 21st on trampoline and seventh on double mini-tramp in the Junior Elite (level 11, 17-under) division.

  • Nani Vercruyssen, a 14-year-old freshman at Roosevelt High School, placed first in the Junior Elite (level 11, ages 17-under) division on trampoline, third on the double mini-trampoline, and first in synchronized trampoline, with partner, Kaci Barry from San Diego.

  • Spencer Madanay, a 13-year-old eighth-grader from Punahou School, placed fourth in the trampoline, 10th on the double mini-tramp, and first in the synchronized trampoline, with partner Kelsen Onigama from Hawai'i, in the pre-elite (level 10, all ages).

  • Kelsen Onigama, an 11-year-old sixth-grader from Kalakaua Middle School, placed fourth on the double mini-tramp, seventh on the trampoline and first in the synchronized trampoline, with Madanay, in the pre-elite (level 10—all ages).
