Kim reaches U.S. Women's Public Links title match

Hawai'i's Kimberly Kim defeated Tiffany Chudy of Miramar, Fla., 4 and 3, on Saturday to advance to the championship match of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Pueblo, Colo.Kim, a 14-year-old former Hilo resident who recently moved to Mesa, Ariz., will play in the 36-hole match play final Sunday at Walking Stick Golf Course against Tiffany Joh of San Diego, who defeated Sara Brown of Tucson, Ariz., 3 and 2 in the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Kim won four consecutive holes to go 4 up after five holes and made the turn at 4 up. She went 5 up when she parred the par-4 11th and Chudy bogeyed. Chudy birdied to win the par-5 13th and cut Kim's lead to 4 up. Both players parred the par-4 14th and birdied the par-5 15th, but with three holes remaining, Kim clinched her spot in the championship.
Joh, 19, will be a sophomore at UCLA in the fall.
In the morning quarterfinals, Kim won seven of the first nine holes en route to a lopsided 9-and-7 match play quarterfinal victory over Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif.
Her margin of victory tied the tournament record held by three others including Maui's Lori (Castillo) Planos, who won consecutive titles in 1979 and 1980.
Kim birdied four of her first five holes and was 8 up at the turn. She birdied the 10th hole to go 8 up. She won the match when Harigae, 16, the stroke play co-medalist, bogeyed the par-4 11th hole and Kim made par.
The start of the quarterfinals were delayed for 1 1/2 hours on Saturday because of high winds.
This is the event that Michelle Wie won as a 13-year-old in 2003 and finished runner-up the following year.
Kim also will play along with Wie, Stephanie Kono and Ayaka Kaneko in next week's U.S. Women's Open.
