1868: Contract Japanese laborers arrive in the Islands.
1899: Queen Kapi'olani dies in her Waikiki home at the age of 64. She was the granddaughter of Kaumuali'i, the last king of the island of Kaua'i.
1941: Three Navy pursuit planes, piloted by Marine officers and engaged in a routine night flight, crash into the west side of Haleakala at 8,000 feet, killing the three pilots.
1953: Gov. King bans aloha shirts for territorial workers during the summer. The previous summer, Gov. Long had allowed men to wear aloha shirts in the interest of comfort and improved efficiency. But King said aloha shirts were not suitable for office workers. Mayor Wilson said city workers could continue to dress casually.
1977: The Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Federal Building is dedicated by first lady Rosalynn Carter. While here, Carter visited the Pearl Harbor home she and Jimmy Carter lived in when he was stationed here as a Navy lieutenant aboard the submarine Pomfret in 1949 and 1950.
1994: Emperor Akihito of Japan honors America's war dead in a ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
