Kim loses in Women's Amateur Publinx championship

Advertiser Staff

Tiffany Joh of San Diego defeated 14-year-old former Hilo resident Kimberly Kim 6 and 5 today to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in Pueblo, Colo.

The event was scheduled for 36 holes but lasted only 31 holes when Joh's lead exceeded the amount of holes remaining. In other words, Joh had won six more holes than Kim and there were only five holes left to play.

Joh, 19, led 2 up after the 18 holes, but expanded her lead with a barrage of four consecutive birdies, starting from hole No. 20. By hole No. 23, Joh's lead was 6 up.

Kim, who now resides in Phoenix, Ariz., broke Joh's string with a birdie on the par-3 24th hole to cut Joh's lead to 5 up.

A Kim birdie on the 27th hole narrowed Joh's lead to 4 up.

But Kim bogeyed the 28th, giving Joh the hole. Joh also won the next hole with an eagle to beat Kim's birdie for a 6-up lead. Both players matched scores on the next two holes and the match ended after the 31st hole.

Joh took a 2-up lead after the first 18 holes. She won the 14th hole with a birdie and the 15th when Kim bogeyed. Kim took a brief lead with a birdie on the par-4 ninth, but saw the match become all-square when she bogeyed the 10th.

To get to the championship, Kim had to qualify through two rounds that pared the field down to 64 players. The 64 then went into match play, or head-to-head competition. She then had to win five matches, including quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Saturday.

This is the same championship that Michelle Wie won as a 13-year-old.
