Hannemann details $2 million package for leeward O'ahu

Advertiser Staff

Mayor Mufi Hannemann announced today that the City Council has approved a $2 million community benefits package to improve the leeward side of the island in return for hosting the island's only municipal landfill.

The benefits package will be divided in half, with $1 million set aside for capital improvements projects to beaches and parks from Kapolei to Makaha. The other $1 million will finance programs and activities operated by nonprofit groups to benefit residents in the same area.

In addition to the $2 million, Hannemann said $350,000 will be spent to provide Wai'anae District Park a much-needed facelift.

Work there will include improvements to the multi-purpose building, painting and minor construction repairs to the gymnasium and outdoor courts.

In September other beaches such as Ma'ili, Nanakuli and Kea'au will also be in store for major facelifts, Hannemann said.
