  • ROBERT SAARNIO, has been named associate director of Shangri La, the five-acre oceanfront Kahala estate that once belonged to heiress and philanthropist Doris Duke. Saarnio will be responsible for the planning, preservation, care and maintenance of the five-acre property, open to public tour under the stewardship of the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. The property includes three late 1930s historic buildings designed by architect Marion Sims Wyeth, gardens and extensive collections of Islamic art. Saarnio is currently the National Endowment for the Arts, Rome Prize Fellow in Historic Preservation, at the American Academy in Rome.

  • KERRY GERSHANECK has been named congressional and public affairs officer for Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. He previously worked in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense.

  • R. PETER CLARK JR. has been named vice president for flight operations and director of operations for Aloha Airlines. He will oversee all aspects of flight operations, including policies and procedures, and day-to-day administration, including staffing and training of the airline's 260 pilots and 375 flight attendants. He will also serve as the airline's liaison with the Federal Aviation Administration. Succeeding Clark as Aloha's chief pilot is Roland M. Smith. Also, MIKE MALIK, has been named chief information officer for the airline.

  • JANIS SAITO BUMGARNER has joined Hawaiian Airlines as senior director for labor relations. She will work with the airline's six labor groups, and administer the contracts for its largest union group, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Bumgarner is a previous Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant and instructor and served as union chairwoman for the Association of Flight Attendants. After leaving Hawaiian in 1991, she practiced law in California and Taipei, Taiwan.

  • BRYAN SHIGEZAWA has been promoted to senior vice president in the treasury and investment division at First Hawaiian Bank.

  • ERIC HODNEFIELD has been named vice president and sales manager of the residential loan division at Finance Factors.

  • KIMBERLI M. KOMO LO, MARC ADELBERGER, EDWARD S. HANASHIRO and D. SCOTT HELMS have all been named vice presidents at Bank of Hawaii. Lo works in the personal trust IRA area; Adelberger is in the leasing division; Hanashiro works in the compliance and community development department; and Helms will serve as the bank's primary merchant services representative.

  • KIM GREENLY and DERWIN OSADA have been named assistant vice president at American Savings Bank, Greenly in the core deposit product division and Osada in the investment department.

  • KY International Inc. Architectural Firm has promoted the following employees to associate: CAROLE UEKI, VIVYAN CHANG and PHILLIP YI LE DENG.
