Pearl City bar's license renewed, with catches

By Rod Ohira
Advertiser Central O'ahu Writer

The Honolulu Liquor Commission last week renewed the liquor license of a Pearl City lounge provided it implements "corrective measures" to address community concerns about loitering, fighting and noise.

According to the commission, the Sportsmen's Lounge at 829 Lehua Ave. must make the following changes:

  • Restrict entrance and exit through its makai-side door for emergency use only and remove the "open" sign currently above this entrance.

"Ultimately, the commission would like to see this door permanently closed and have Sportsmen's relocate the door to another location," city deputy corporation counsel Moana Yost said in a written statement to community leaders advising them of the June 22 commission decision. The bar's management says it cannot get a building permit to change the location of the door and the commission has ordered management to produce a copy of the letter, added Yost.

  • Use the mauka-side door for bar patrons to enter and exit.

  • Establish new business hours: 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays; 10 to 4 a.m. on Saturdays, and 10 to 2 a.m. on Sundays. Previously, the bar was open from noon to 4 a.m.

  • Provide adequate security guards outside the bar to ensure patrons do not disrupt neighbors.

  • Reduce business to excessive numbers of bikes, motorcycles and vehicles due to the lack of adequate parking.

  • Have its new manager on the premises during late nights and during the day.

Most of the measures recommended on behalf of the community by Rep. Mark Takai, D-34th (Newtown, Waiau, Pearl City, Waimalu) at the commission's June 15 hearing were adopted with some modifications last week.

The Liquor Commission will review the issue of compliance by Sportsmen's Lounge on Sept. 21.

The public can report any on-going liquor violations by calling the Liquor Commission's 24-hour hot line at 523-4194.
