Hayashi ties for 56th in PGA event

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 3-over-par 75 yesterday and finished tied for 56th in the PGA Professional National Championship at Verona, N.Y.

Hayashi had a four-round total of 4-over-par 292. He won $2,100.

Ron Philo Jr. bogeyed the third playoff hole and defeated Alan Schulte to win the title at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino's Atunyote Golf Course.

Schulte made double-bogey after finding the right hazard off the tee.

Philo, the head professional at the Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, N.Y., shot a final-round 68, and Schulte, of Fishers, Ind., shot 71. Both finished 72 holes tied at 10-under 278. Philo won $75,000, and Schulte $48,000.

The top 20 finishers earn an automatic berth in this year's PGA Championship, Aug. 17 to 20 at the Medinah Country Club near Chicago.

NISHI EARNS VICTORY IN PEARL PRESIDENT'S CUP

Honolulu's Patrick Nishi fired a 5-under-par 67 for a two-stroke victory in the 2006 Pearl President's Cup yesterday at Pearl Country Club.

Nishi shot even-par 144 for the 36-hole tournament. Mililani's Kevin Teruya finished runner-up at 76—146.

CARLL WINS BY A STROKE AT KAPALUA CLAMBAKE

Turtle Bay Resort's Kevin Carll edged Nicholas Bollini by a stroke to win the 2006 Kapalua Clambake Pro-Am yesterday at the The Kapalua Resort's Bay and Village courses.

Carll finished at 133 (66-67), beating Bollini's 134 (65-69).
