1900: Gov. Sanford B. Dole decides it would be better for Honolulu if there were no rum shops on Fort Street, the city's main retail business street.
1946: One-third of Honolulu's milk supply is cut off when workers strike the Hind-Clarke Dairy. The work dispute flared when an employee was fired for alleged insubordination. The strike ends on June 30.
1952: The Halema'uma'u pit of Kilauea crater erupts after being quiet since 1934.
1959: Hawai'i voters approve a statehood referendum by a wide margin.
1986: A trunk containing a cane, pipe and polished kukui nut that belonged to Father Damien de Veuster and photos of the priest sit unclaimed in the Solano County, Calif., coroner's office, where it has been for 25 years, The Advertiser reports.
