The Japanese steamer Yamashiro Maru was under quarantine and King Kalakaua sent the Royal Hawaiian Band out on the government tug to serenade those stuck on board. The king went along and had food and flowers delivered to the Yamashiro Maru, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on June 28, 1885.

1945: Fresh meat and some canned pork are expected in the Islands by Aug. 1, a food conference held in the senate chambers in 'Iolani Palace is told. A large supply of eggs was also expected shortly. There had been an extreme meat shortage in the territory, and bread output was also reduced because of a shortage of shortening.

1965: A Honolulu-bound Pan American jet catches fire moments after taking off from San Francisco airport. Its right outboard engine and one third of the right wing fell off in flight and the plane made an emergency landing at Travis Air Force Base. No one was injured.

1967: The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents upholds the UH administration's decision to deny tenure to Oliver Lee.

2002: The state Land Board rejects Hawaiian Electric Co.'s proposed $31 million power-line project on Wa'ahila Ridge conservation land.
