Wie 1 back; 3 other Hawai'i teens way back

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a 1-under-par 70 today and is a shot off the leaders after the opening round of the U.S. Women's Open in Newport, R.I.

Three other Hawai'i golfers didn't fare as well.

Kimberly Kim shot a 6-over 77; Ayaka Kaneko shot 9-over 80 and Stephanie Kono finished with an 11-over 82.

Wie is one back of the leaders.

The four leaders are Se Ri Pak, Jane Park, Pat Hurst, and Annika Sorenstam. All shot 2-under-par 69s today.

The 72-hole event — one of four major LPGA tournaments — was postponed yesterday because of lingering fog. The tournament is scheduled for 18 holes each today and tomorrow and 36 holes Sunday. The field will be cut after tomorrow's round.

The forecast for the weekend appears somewhat promising, with sunny skies predicted for most of the time but a chance of a thunderstorm Sunday.

Wie had two birdies and a bogey on her day in which she hit 12 of 18 greens in regulation and had 28 putts.

Wie birdied on the par-3 fifth hole, but bogeyed the par-4 ninth to make the turn at even par. She parred the rest of the way until she birdied the 18th.

Kim birdied her second hole, a par-4, but then double bogeyed the par-4 third. She also double bogeyed the par-4 eighth and bogeyed the par-4 ninth and the par-5 10th. She birdied the par-4 11th, but bogeyed the par-4 14th and the par-5 16th.
