In 1912, the Civic Federation steps in to save a grove of algaroba trees on the slopes of Punchbowl.

1889: A public meeting is held to discuss "the present mal-administration of public affairs and to consider means of redress." The Pacific Commercial Advertiser listed those present, including Lorrin Thurston, Sanford Dole, Charles Reed Bishop and Alexander Cartwright. The paper noted that very few Hawaiians were at the meeting.

1910: The Lower Hamakua Ditch is formally opened when water is turned into the highest tunnel several miles up Waipi'o valley.

1914: The Libby, McNeill and Libby pineapple cannery in Kalihi begins operation. It employed 1,000 workers.

1921: The U.S. House passes the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, which had been previously passed by the Senate.

1931: Princess David Kawananakoa accepts the position of spokeswoman for the alumni of Kamehameha Schools in their effort to prevent the opening of the schools to non-Hawaiians by the schools' trustees.

1959: The commercial jet age begins in Hawai'i with the arrival of a Qantas Boeing 707 called the City of Sydney. The plane made the flight from San Francisco in four hours and 49 minutes. The Royal Hawaiian Band was on hand to help greet the plane and played "Waltzing Matilda."
