Warriors lose defensive end Tautofi, add ex-Crusader DB

By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

The University of Hawai'i football team is losing a former All-State player but gaining another.

Defensive end Daniel Tautofi is taking a personal leave of absence from football and will not play this season.

But Stephen Lei, an All-State defensive back and 2006 Saint Louis School graduate, is joining the Warriors as a nonscholarship player.

Also, Cameron Allen-Jones, the younger brother of UH outside linebacker C.J. Allen-Jones, has been invited to the Warriors' training camp in August.

UH coach June Jones said Tautofi will remain on scholarship.

"He's a great kid, and I'm glad Daniel and his brother (former UH defensive lineman Darrell Tautofi) were part of our family," Jones said. "Daniel has a lot of things going on. He's got a family he needs to provide for. He did a lot of good things for us, and we're happy he'll continue his education and hopefully graduate."

Tautofi, who was born in Fort Carson, Colo., is a 2003 graduate of Kaimuki High School. As a senior, he was named to The Advertiser's All-State first team in football and basketball. He also was named the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's East Player of the Year in basketball in 2003.

Tautofi, who graduated cum laude, was a member of Kaimuki's Polynesian, Key and Travel Industry Management clubs.

He turned down a football offer from Oregon to sign with the Warriors in February 2003.

At UH, Tautofi redshirted in 2003 after suffering an injury. He was used mostly on special teams in 2004 and 2005.

Lei, who is 6 feet 3 and now weighs 225 pounds, is projected to compete at linebacker for the Warriors.

Allen-Jones, a 6-foot-1, 240-pound linebacker from Maryland, redshirted at Marshall last fall. In February, he announced he would not return to Marshall for the 2006 season.
