	Motorists' failure to observe the rules of the road was a concern even in 1900.

1905: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that strychnine was found in a bottle of bicarbonate of soda that Mrs. Jane Stanford had consumed before she died in her room at the Moana Hotel on Feb. 28.

1911: The food commissioner orders each poi factory closed and prohibits the sale of poi. All poi in homes was to be destroyed. Officials believed some of the poi being sold in Honolulu was contaminated with cholera.

1930: The Honolulu Advertiser reports that bids will be opened March 24 for construction of the first units of the new Kamehameha School on 45 acres of land.

1956: A $7 million residential housing development, Foster Village, is launched.

1966: The first satellite photo of Island weather is taken by the new ESSA 2 meteorological satellite.

1967: Hawai'i wins its battle for common airfares between the Mainland and any point in the Islands. United and Pan American say they will institute a flat $200 common fare for roundtrip coach class between Los Angeles or San Francisco and any point in Hawai'i.

1972: An assistant professor of religion at the University of Hawai'i pours a plastic container of blood on two drawers of top-secret files at Hickam Air Force Base as a protest against the war in Vietnam.

1981: Two teenagers hijack a busload of 35 Japanese tourists at Honolulu Airport, injuring one victim and robbing dozens of others.

1999: Pioneer Mill in Lahaina announces it will end sugar operations.
