"Conviction" debut, 9 p.m., NBC. Many dramas would be more interesting if seen from the start the moment a character reaches fresh turf. That's what puts "Conviction" above the other shows from "Law & Order" producer Dick Wolf. In those shows, people are already at the top of their game. Here, Wolf lets us see assistant district attorneys from the beginning. It's the first day of work for Nick Potter, a rich guy who took a pay cut to go after crooks. Jordan Bridges Beau's son, Jeff's nephew, Lloyd's grandson plays him well. It's the first day in court for Sara Finn played by Julianne Nicholson, with great moments as she collides with a tough judge. The ending is weak, but there are powerful moments along the way.

"Stargate SG-1," 6 p.m., Sci Fi Channel. Claudia Black, formerly of "Farscape" and now the larcenous Vala, relates a bizarre but important tale from an Ori galaxy.

"The Ghost Whisperer," 7 p.m., CBS. An angry ghost seems intent on hurting a baby.
