Honolulu Marathon clinic starts March 12

 •  Getting back to basics helps fill need for speed

The Honolulu Marathon Clinic will begin its nine-month run March 12 and continue every Sunday until the marathon on Dec. 10.

The free clinic will meet on Sundays, except for three-day weekends, across from Paki Hale at 3833 Paki Ave., in Kapi'olani Park at 7:30 a.m.

Honolulu cardiologist Jack Scaff leads the clinic. Talks include training, diet, cholesterol, shoes and dealing with injuries.

There also will be group runs led by volunteers who have completed at least one marathon.

There are three groups at the clinic: beginning, intermediate and advanced runners.

RELAY FOR LIFE TONIGHT

The second Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, is scheduled to start at 7 tonight and end at 7 tomorrow morning at the University of Hawai'i's Cooke Field.

The event is hosted by the University of Hawai'i Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Activities include a 12-hour walk for cancer, face painting, line and salsa dancing, basketball, dodgeball and a Texas Hold 'em tournament.

UH student-athletes also will sign autographs.

The event will open with a survivor's lap. A ceremony to honor those affected by cancer is scheduled for 10 p.m.

TEAM SPORTS CLINIC

Hawai'i TEAM Sports will hold its first combine and clinic of the year at Nanakuli High School tomorrow.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the cost is $10 per person.

SWAMP ROMP SET

The 12th annual CSSG-3 Swamp Romp, an obstacle mud run, is scheduled for March 25 at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe Bay.

The event — open to the public — is organized by Marine Corps Community Services and Combat Service Support Group 3.

Teams of six go through a race course of mud, sand, ocean and obstacles.
