Japan is the focus of two events this weekend:

  • The exhibit "Japan & Nature: Spirits of the Seasons" kicks off in grand style from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Hawai'i Children's Discovery Center in Kaka'ako. The reigning Cherry Blossom queen and her court will appear at 10 a.m. and there'll be a taiko drum performance, bon dance demos and lessons and activities for the kids.

The traveling exhibit takes viewers to spring in Fukuoka, summer at Lake Biwa, fall in Kyoto and winter in Sapporo. It continues through June 4.

    Admission is $8 general, $6.75 youngsters 2-17. 524-5437.

  • The temples and gardens of Kyoto, and crowds and skyscrapers of Tokyo feature in multimedia presentations on Japan's ancient and modern capital cities offered at 3 and 7 p.m. tomorrow at Tenney Theatre, St. Andrew's Cathedral. The photography is by Dennis Callan, president of the Hawaii Geographic Society, who hosts the events.

    Admission is free. 528-4411.
