1867: The cornerstone of St. Andrew's Cathedral is laid.

1908: The cornerstone for McKinley High School is laid "with appropriate ceremonies and in the presence of a large number of distinguished persons."

1911: The Board of Health orders all three fishmarkets at the corner of Kekaulike and King streets cleaned. Old and smelly fish are destroyed.

1926: Family patronage in appointive public offices in Hawai'i will be closely watched and guarded against, according to an announcement from Washington.

1952: Ground is broken for Star of the Sea School on Kalaniana'ole Highway.

1953: Soviet Premier Josef Stalin dies at the age of 73.

1958: O'ahu is deluged with more than 17 inches of rain. At the time it was the heaviest 24-hour rainfall recorded in Island history. A fisherman drowns, at least 15 families flee their homes and at least 100 homes are damaged.

1965: Makaopuhi Crater on Kilauea's east slope begins to spew fountains of lava.

1971: A maliciously set fire heavily damages a University of Hawai'i temporary office building. It was a week after a fire gutting the ROTC building on the UH campus.

1977: Two protesters' 35-day stay on Kaho'olawe ends when they voluntarily give themselves up to military authorities.

1998: Beatrice Krauss, whose knowledge of Island plants and their place in Hawaiian culture made her a Hawai'i institution, dies at the age of 94.

2001: The Advertiser announces it will build a new printing and distribution facility in Kapolei on 11.6 acres of land that will be purchased from Campbell Estate.
